I am on AOL Platinum package which offers up to 8mb speeds. All was well with this until the last couple of days. I now find that my speed is much slower, i am only getting download speeds of 126kbps and upload speeds of 366kbps. Now i know speeds can vary form time to time but this much ? I have contacted AOL who as usual were not very helpful. They sent me an email of things to try none of which worked. I have not made any changes to my computer either as AOL suggested. Any suggestions please ?

Dear Friend, get my very very honest suggestion from bottom of my heart: " GET RID OF AOL AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE" Just worst in the whole world and I can't imagine how AOL did business in USA with 23.99 for dial Up before? Only possible in US and no where else they would survive. Their helpline is just morons.

So, trash AOL and get permanent solution to your problem.

The possible causes are clogged network, system junk, invalid registry, spywares.

Anyway, in the short term try the following:

1. Get ccleaner (www.ccleaner.com). Run it and clean all system junk files and invalid registry entries.. Run it if not every day, every other day to keep system clean. Also, using the startup control in ccleaner, delete the unwanted entries in startup(those which are not system related or your anti-virus related).

2. Shut down PC. Trun off your modem and wait 5 minutes. Then turn the modem ON. Wait another 1 minute and start PC.

3. Don't connect to internet yet. Go to start>programs>accessories>system tools>disk clean up> the disk clean up window will show up. Go to advanced tab first. click on "delete all but last system restore info".(it is the bottom last option under advanced tab. Now go back to general tab and clean the junks.

4. Make sure you are not using firewall like norton internet security or any Mcafee. Those are just nonsense. get rid of those if there. Install zone alarm free firewall(http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp?).

5. Install two anti-spywares : spybot(http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html) and adware se(http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php). Run those to check for spywares.

When done, reconnect to internet. See if improves.

My honest solution and hope it helps your cause.

I'm not with AOL, but for the last 2 days my computer has been really really slow, its really bugging me. Have cleared cookies, history etc but no different. Takes ages to finally come on and then takes ages to get to my emails and other pages. A real pain. I have done a scan etc and it says nothing located. No viruses, trackers etc. So i'm stumped.
Have just run the test as stated below and my results were... Download speed 1898 kbps and Upload speed 241kbps, i'm not into computers, so havent a clue what this means???? I am with BT Yahoo.

The speed of the Internet is determined by the number of users on-line at any one time. You may find your Internet connection is quicker in the small hours and slower as the business day gets going.

You can speed up your Internet connection by purchasing ONSPEED at their website. This program will probably more than double your speed. You pay for this on an annual basis. Here in UK the cost is about £20.

If you have a modem, try resetting that. If you have cable try checking it to see if it has been damaged in any way. If you think it is an AOL problem (MOST LIKELY) keep calling them until you get satisfaction. A hint, you can tell them you are going to withhold payment for services until this is resolved. (Don't really withhold payment) For some reason they get paranoid when you start talking about dropping them or withholding payment. Good Luck
