The word Christmas is a compilation of two words. First "Christ" the name of the son of God, second mass, meaning a religious reverent service. So we have a reverent service in celebration to the birth of "Christ"

The origins of Christmas date to Pagan celebrations of the Winter Solstice.

As Christianity spread, Christians co-opted or converted existing Pagan holidays (Easter is another example) into Christian celebrations.

Christmas is an easy one to demonstrate as the bible makes clear there were shepherds in the fields - which means lambing season (which occurs in spring, not winter)...

So Christians took the Pagan holiday, and altered it into a celebration of the birth of Jesus, however incorrect the actual date.

From my point of view, the true meaning of Christmas is all of the family gathering to celebrate the birth of baby Jesus. Unfortunately, nowadays the true meaning of Christmas is an open bar "all you can drink".

The true meaning of Christmas is to act like we love people we actually hate and give them gifts. It's also a time to make an annual karma deposit in the form of charity, and act as if we give to them all year, but 49 weeks out of 52 we spit on the homeless.
