3.Albert Ellis’s REBT consists of 4 steps. The first of these is helping the client to recognize irrational beliefs and how these beliefs have been operating in his life. The second step is to investigate what sort of emotions have been caused by these irrational thoughts. The third step is the application of REBT in order to have the client change his irrational beliefs. This is done using the ABCDEF method. Where the Activating event, the Belief, the Consequent emotion ABC are then treated with D Disputing of emotions and E an Effect, a change at the cognitive, emotional or behavioral level. Then this will result in F, a new Feeling.
A client complains of feeling down after she is denied a job she applied for. So what was your belief about this event? She says, “ I thought that if I couldn’t get this job, that meant that I could never get a job and consequently I would be poor and homeless!” So now as a consequent emotion, she feels depressed. So now she must dispute her aggravating thought: What makes her think that if she doesn’t get a job now, that she will never get one, certainly there is no evidence of this. Based on previous failure in obtaining a job, her qualifications and her appeal to employers for future jobs will not be decreased. There is no reason to think she will end up poor and homeless after being turned down for one, or even many jobs. After going through these rational thoughts to counter her irrational ones, a new Effect for the client was produced and a new, less depressed, more empowered feeling has occurred.
