I have an IUD, and would like to know if there are any complications related to fertility in the future.

1st Id like to clear that the IUD Mirena is the most effective birth control out there even more effective than tubal ligation!

However YES it can compromise your fertility. If you have multiple partners or your partner has multiple partners since then you are at an increase risk of Infection and infections are hard to treat with an IUD in place and an untreated infection can lead to infertility.

Another way is if you have a small uterus (never had children) you are at risk of it perforating your uterus.

However it is rare but it happens

Now for the previous poster who said it takes longer to regain fertility its untrue you regain fertility the same day its removed.

if you have progesterone releasing IUD then there may be a slight delay in getting pregnant which can be attributed to IUD (not more than 6 months). however, if you have a copper releasing IUD, then the copper at least wont be stopping from getting you pregnant immediately. if at all there may be other factors which may delay pregnancy. copper IUDs have other side-effects however the answer related to your query is over. good luck.

iud's aren't perfect so you should also use a spermicide. as for problems getting pregnant later, the iud is easily removed, and should be removed and replaced as directed by the manufacturer. other than timing, there should be no complications, unless it is a physical one for one or the other.
