You really need to see it to do it justice, but it is suppossed to be the real story of Cinderella. In this one she isn't much impressed with the prince, and very much a tom boy. It has many but not all the characteristics of the story cinderella.

Its a loose version of cinderella set in the french countryside sometime between 1500-1650 based on the french courts/dress attire-the story starts with an OLD lady telling the story of these jeweled crusted shoes(slippers if you may) they belonged her great, great, great grandmother(drew barrymore)-drew plays her character very fiesty and a relative feminist compared to the norms at the time-angelica huston plays the wicked stepmother-one step sister is sorta pretty, the other not so much-the deceit is a little different in that drew pretends to be a lady of some standing by citing a relatives name to the prince in order to free her houseman who the stepmonster sold a s a slave-the prince falls in love with her thinking she's someone that she's not so then falls out of love when he finds out she is without "good breeding" as the name implies, it does all eventually work out to happily everafter...

i completely forgot the names of the characters but hope this will help:Ü
Drew's dad is a "Count". Her mother died when she was very young and her father remarried who turns out to be the wicked stepmom with 2 daughters. The eldest daughter was just like her mom while the second is the one that is close to Drew. Anyway, Drew is being taken care of her 2 nannies who stayed loyal to her. Just after her dad's wedding to the new countess, he died of a heart attack and soon starts Drew's agony. Just like Cinderella, she was told to clean the house..etc..etc..
Now, when her nanny's husband has to be exiled, Drew went to the palace and pretended as a princess and that was when she first met the prince who automatically fell in love with her. So they became an item without the prince knowing who she really is.
Then one unfortunate event, the prince discovered that she was just a peasant and Drew was sold to a rich man to become a slave (as payment for her stepmom's debts). And the prince, as the knight in the shining armor, came to rescue her after he came back to his senses.
The ending of the story is Drew becoming the princess and the stepmom and the elder daughter became laundrywomen in the palace. And Drew and her prince lived happily ever after..Ü

Cinderella with a twist really, They drop out the magic and set it in France in the middle ages. Her father dies at the beginning, wicked stepmother, and 1 wicked stepsister(the other one was downtrodden really). Pretended to be her mother in order to rescue a servent from being sold into slavery. Definitely a must see, and its not that old a movie. Old is like Casablanca......the classics. Ever After was made in the early 90s, so not really old, unless you were born in the late 80s or early 90s.

I think that the industry has just become more specific with the ratings...that's all. Remember back in the day when there were only like 4 ratings (G, PG, R, and X)? Now there are a gazillion ratings based on those and a few new letters in between. So, no worries...same movie...just more precise rating listed.
