I think the magic just goes away when you get older.
It seems the only way to recover that magic, at least partially, is to have kids and grandkids, and re-live the magic with them as they grow up.
Of course, you have to be willing to take on a lot of other baggage. Personally, I'd prefer to just lose the magic and have no kids!
