As long as you have the snakes in secure cages with locks then I see no problem, Perhaps you can put them in a spare room or basement so the children can't get to the snakes at will. The odds of a boa getting out and harming one of the kids is pretty slim. These horror stories that you see on the news once in a while are because of the stupidity of the keeper, not the snake. If you are still concerned, then maybe you can start with a small to moderate colubrid like a corn snake, king snake or gopher snake or a small python like a Children's python that doesn't get any bigger than 3 ft. A rosy boa would be a good family snake also. I have 5 snakes and a 2 year old girl. There has never been a safety or health issue for her. The snakes are all in a spare bedroom. She loves them. She is being taught to respect them and how to behave when I am interacting with them or doing cage maintenance. Because she is not reckless and is well behaved, I don't have to worry about her messing with them when I'm not around. As far as physical interaction with goes, it's best to wait untill your 5 year old is a few years older.
