They lie to escape the truth. Most of the time people lie so that they won't have to get in trouble for what they did.

Why do people sneeze? There are many different reasons behind this.
Maybe the person has a mental illness..
Maybe the person wants financial gain out of his/her lies, money.
Maybe the person doesn't want to hurt someone feeling therefor tells a little "white" lie. These lies are considered harmless but are still lies.

Come right down to it people do not like honest people. Have you ever herd the phrase "kill the messenger"? (this is in the bible even) People want to hear what they want to hear. Most people do not want the truth. The "bearer of bad news" usually is the person who tells the truth, the truth of course being the bad news....
Find a truthful telling person and ask them a question about something that will hurt your feeling, or a question you think they will think will hurt your feelings.....see them himing and howing not wanting to answer.
A husband knows to well how to tell white lies..."honey how do I look in this dress"....How many husbands are going to tell a truth to there wife who looks horrendous in that dress, but does not want to hurt her feelings...Or "do I look fat".

Because as they see it at the time of the lie the consequences of the lie are Less then the consequences of the truth. that is not to say that that may be true or that it will not remain true as long as the truth is kept hidden indefinitely or until such time as it is warranted.

lying has 3 components: intent to deceive, lack of belief, & falsity. sometimes they don't know the answer but think that they do. sometimes it's to deceive someone so that the speaker will benefit in some way, if only for amusement. however, everyone defines lying differently, & depending on the context, motivation, outcome, & definition, lying could be ok or bad. social norms require some amount of lying. how often do you hear the answer to "how are you?" as a description of the speaker's well being?

Fear generally. They think their "truth" won't work in the situation.

They fear it might be unpopular, or cause some negative attention, they are lazy and the truth requires explanation, the explanation is embarassing to them.........lots of reasons to lie.

Only one for telling the truth. (Prove it!) Tends to end arguments.
