Last 2 full years in a 4 year span: .290 23 HR 95 RBI hitter
Never mind that Scott Boras is his agent, the Bosox are the ones waving the money around. But why? He's not even worth $8 million in my honest opinion.

JD (I'll never play in Philadelphia) Drew thought he was the second coming of Mickey Mantle. A legend in his own mind. He never came close. He's not much of a teammate from all the reports you get around the league and seems to find his way to the DL at least once a season. The Red Sox are so hell bent on beating the Yankees they have opened the flood gates to negotiating as many top free agents as they can. With a brief taste of success in '04 the Sox still feel inferior to the Yankees and want the top spot again. I think they would rather beat the Yankees 18 times a year than win another world series. That's how much they hate New York.

They will continue to spend as much money as they deem necessary to win out over the Yankees. So far Boston as done nothing to improve themselves. $102M on an unproven triple A pitcher from Japan will come back to haunt them. And JD Drew will do nothing but create problems in the clubhouse just like he has done with every team he has been with.

I agree with you that J.D. Drew is not worth that much, right now anyway. I am concerned that Hatsuzaka may not end up being worth $102 million over 6 years. I hope I am wrong in both cases.
Either Scott Boras is one hell of an agent or he has pictures of Theo Epstein with Isis, Bud Bundy's former rubber girlfriend.

I agree. he didn't do much for the Dodgers last season (I live in L.A.), and he's not worth that much money. He was good, but not a 'great' player. But remember, the agent gets a cut of that figure; so imagine Scott Boras getting about 1.4 mil a year? No way!

how is arod worth $25 million a year? i agree with all of the above who say that they are overpaid big time. but also, the cost of owning a team, ballpark/arena, marketing, and the salary of every member of the head office of each franchise is quite expensive. these salaries are higher than what guys were gettin paid back in the 20s,30s, etc, but i dont think by that much. its all inflasion (sp?). if babe ruth was getting this money back in the day, i would say his contract would be over $17 mill a year, maybe $20 mill+??

anywho, ya drew is overpaid, but so are the mediocre pitchers this year.

Drew is a baseball legend - if you ask J.D. Drew and his agent.

The Red Sox are looking for an out right now because Drew seems to have flunked his physical. We'll see what develops, but if Drew ends up unsigned, I'll lose no sleep.

I personally don't think he is. He played for the Cardinals in 2003 and we traded him to the Braves for a deal that included then-minor-league Adam Wainwright, Ray King and Jason Marquis. We also sent Eli Marerro to the Braves, who recently signed a minor-league contract with us. I think we made out pretty well, especially since our biggest need right now is pitching. I don't think Drew is worth $14 mil/year. I've heard that he spends a fair amount of time on the DL and his motivation is shaky. Of course, that's all I've heard, so I can't say it for sure.

How is Gil Meche worth 55 Million?
How is Barry Bonds worth 16 Million?
How is Ted Lilly worth 42 Million?
How is Matsuzaka worth 102 Million?
Its all absurd. The owners are throwing monopoly money around for 2nd tier players. It's funny how everyone has always accused the Yankees of buying championships. Now look who's doing it.

Because the Red Sox are stupid. $14 million for JD Drew or $9 million for Julio Lugo. I don't know which is a worse contract.

He's not. JD Drew is about the most overrated player in baseball and now he's about to become the most overpaid player in baseball. There's a reason he's bounced from the Cardinals to the Braves to the Dodgers and now to Boston. And he's going to the AL where he doesnt know any of the pitchers, he's going to struggle.

Easy. Sox General Manager Theo Epstein has an absolute man-crush with any player that walks a lot and has a high on-base percentage (OBP). And Drew has both.

What Epstein doesn't realize is that 3 walks in a single inning will equal exactly ZERO runs. Still need some one to drive them in!

I agree 8 mil is to much to pay for a guy that makes Manny look like Cal Ripkin Jr. or Lou Gerhig!.
