There is a senior citizen home close near our home. I put an ad on the bullentin board in the rec hall looking for lawn care help. Well with the expenses of the home a LOT of people called me to inquire about the position. I told them to come by and I would show them the yard and we would discuss the price and what I expect to be done from who ever I decide to hire. Well I have hired MANY of them,..they will work for peanuts and most of them have never complained and the other day my wife noticed that "Dennis" one of the workers was out in the yard raking and mowing the 1 acre lawn we have (He is 74) She was mad at me because she noticed I had been laying on the couch watching TV and drinking beer while "Dennis" was out sweating and panting. Seems he got a bit dehydrated..I provide the water..I cannot force to the people to drink it. SO she is mad at me now? What gives? I am providing a valuable service to the seniors of our community..I am afterall paying them minimum wage.

Thats not a bad thing to do cos you make them busy and give them money too. Just comeout once in a while and chat w them for a few min, provide water and snacks will also do.
However, if ur wife gets mad at you (she might be a softie, cant see old people work yous see) and if ur garden is a huge ones and need heavy work, ill suggest you get a young ones. They are not that expensive and you lower down the risk of these old folks get heart attack or stroke in your lawn.

I agree with you. Older people want to feel useful and show they are still part of society. People in their 70's are not old in this day and age. If they didn't want to work for you they would not have responded to your ad. What a great idea. You probably work at least a 40 hour week and deserve some time to relax. The people from the senior citizens home probably relax more than 40 hours a week and are happy to have something to do. Again, great idea.

I think it's a good idea if you are asking the care providers at the center if they are capable of the work. Some of them might think the mower is the VCR and try to watch a movie in it and cut their arm off. If I was elderly and in a home I'd LOVE to help if I was able. (For free even)

Yea, you need to think about helping that man by standing by him as he works with your arms crossed and nodding my approval. Being there for him by getting him some peanuts for his 15min break from the yard work. Your wife would understand you more if you made sure that he new he would get a bonus(5$ and some of my old porn) from me for work done sooner than later.

You do have the right to employ whoever you want and pay them at least the minimum wage but I really dont know how you can live with yourself. People who take advantage of others are pretty low in my eyes and I dont know how you sleep at night. Good for your wife for being angry with you. If my husband did this I would have to seriously think about what type of rip off artist I had married.

i think its just okay, coz aside from making them healthy you also help them make money. old people (specially the conservative ones) dont like the feeling of being useless. i would just like to suggest (to keep your wife from nagging you) to add some small treats for them like having them for dinner or lunch everytime they do your lawn, making sure that they wont get dehydrated, providing snacks during work. i think that will do (anyway i think what your wants to tell you is that you should help them do the lawn)

Cheers!
