Well this is how I do it- Keep your fingers aligned with the first four buttons, and whenever a note pops up on the bottom button, hit it with your pinky and change the rest of your fingers down a button, but worry bout your pinky first.
If you have problems with the chords, I find it really easy to not fret the entire chord at first, just whatever button you are comfortable reaching, and then moving the next finger down. While practicing this youll no doubt miss the chord the first few times but youll get faster at it if you repeat a chord heavy song a few times. It works real well for three finger chords because instead of trying to mash all of them down at once(unless theyre all next to each other, mash away, but the ones with a space is what this strategy is for) I hold the two buttons next to each other and then worry about the note thats seperated by a button. another thing chord wise is the odd changes.Like button 1 and 2 chord changing to button 2 and four-same idea.Worry about putting the fourth finger down, then release the 1st button, and again it might take a while to get that up to speed but it works fairly well.

Last tip is about solos where the buttons span the entire fretboard-sliding can hurt, but if the pattern is starting on the red button, goes down to the bottom, then comes back up to green, try to just slide your first finger and have the rest of your fingers raised, it wont kill your hand so much-same Idea with the pinky when going back down, try to slide only the pinky and have the rest of the fingers raised.

You need to learn what they refer to as slamming, if I remember the right term, the term doesn't matter. Basicly its holding down of a fret (or frets) not being used to increase speed to closely placed notes, this only works with single notes though, if it requires holding more tan one fret for a note you can't do this, in those cases it will read all frets held. The best thing to do is to get use to learning which frets your going to need at what time and play the songs over and over and over and.... until you get them down and learn what frets are where in the song, that way your hand will be in place and you wont have to jump around the neck so much, the sad thing is the game in this case is just like a real guitar you have to memorise the dang songs to be any good at them.
