Could a default on the dollar, and a subsequent collapse of the economy, lead to a general collapse of the government, and fragmentation of the U.S. into successor states? e.g. Soviet Union fragments to become a number of independent nations; Russia, Ukraine, etc.

I'm so glad that there is someone else that knows what state means. The Dollar failing, yes. Some Economist are predicting its going to happen soon. THe Chinese are scared witless and actually trying to prepare for it. The unfortunate part is that the Chinese are the ones proppong up the Dollar. Chinese own alot of American bonds. As the United States breaking apart, I wish Cailfiornia can leave the union, but no. We have stronger cultural ties than the Soviet Union. If you noticed, most of the Muslim nations broke away from Russia, while half the Christian nations want to reunite. Texas, seems it wants to be its own country though, but I doubt they would since they control too much of America now. There are too many people moving back and forth from the various states to allow a break, and there is such a short history in the states, that the people would identify belonging to a state more than a nation. Texas seems to be the only exception.

There is always the possibility that the US could fail. Think of all the great empires of history that fell-Roman, Ottoman etc. They were the the Americas of their day (and lasted longer than the USA has so far).

I'm not sure that your scenario of the dollar collapsing and pushing down the rest of the house of cards to too likely, at least in the short run. Don't forget that many of the independent nations of the former USSR had strong national identities before they became part of it. that said there does seem to be a deepening cultural schism in the USA today-so who knows where it could lead....

A sobering thought!

My dear if that would happen there would be a real WWIII. And then again if it would happen it was planned from within the government (traitors), to control as a New World Order. And that would definately a blood bath certainly worse than the Colonial Wars. So no I do not believe that this country will fail as a State?
But Nation is the word you are looking for, no not as a Nation either, for America keeps the balance for the other countries surrounding. And guess what if we werent here, who would everyone hate and blame then? They would have to start blaming themselves? And they are too much in denial for that.

It will happen sooner or later. I believe it is inevitable. Whether it happens the way you ask or not, it doesn't matter. It could even be another civil war or even a bloated government bureaucracy that can't pay it's bills. It could even be a new revolution or a terrorist organization that explodes a nuclear weapon in the atmosphere and cause an EMP, but something will happen that will bring this country down.

This will happen eventually, it will go the way of the USSR as it gets involved in more wars it can't afford.
The USA is a continental empire like the USSR used to be and the only certain thing about empires is that they eventually collapse.

I think that the US might be too huge geographically and population-wise to survive as it is now. It may eventually break up into several "republics" like the Soviet Union did.

no, there's not a possiblity of that. The break up of the Soviet Union had nothing to do with that.
