"The Three Faces of Eve" is a better movie for understanding the disorder than the Jim Carrey comedy.
If memory serves, I think the different personalities only become aware of each other when the therapist tells her they exist.
It's a very powerful, excellent movie. I highly recommend it.
FOLLOWUP: I saw a response to the effect that the disorder only exists in this country because there are books and movies about it, and that it does not exist elsewhere where there are no such books or movies.
This is flat-out ignorant nonsense. It's a real disorder and is reported in different countries. The idea that mental disorders exist only because people believe movies and books about them is fatuous.

To my understanding these people do not know they have more then one personality. When the other personality takes over they go into blackouts, time lost.
If they no they exist it is because someone told them they exist, not because they feel it etc.
No it is more then just a change "mood". To my understanding.
When I eat certain sugars I get extremely hyper, one could say a powerful change occurs (bouncing off the walls, typing a million words a minutes etc). This does not mean I have some other personality....
Multiple Personality Disorder is a rare disorder. Because of the publicity on a few rare individuals and the movies about this out now people now think they might have this....If you have this do some reading up on it, talk to your doctor who diagnosed you. Otherwise if you think you may have it, go to a professional.

No,they are not aware of the other personality existing or even when the "switching" happens. It's not only about emotions, they can create totally different (many times totally opposite) personalities, with different hand writing even! (how strong their desire is to be someone else).
I very much liked the movie Identity (with John Cusak),you'll see the tragic of a humans brain..

Watch Me Myself and Irene...that might help you understand. I don't know if you remember the show Taxi but there was a guy on there that had a funny accent I can't remember his name but he had a split personality in real life. Jim Carey did a movie about it. I think it was Man on the Moon. One of his personalties was a health nut and the other personality was a chain smoker. It was a big difference in his personality. He died with lung cancer because of it. Oh and replying to the answer before Bi Polar isn't mulitple personality disorder that's totally different. O.o Where did she get that idea??

Multiple Personality Disorder is exceptionally rare. It's only common in America because we have movies and books about it. Places where they don't have those find that it really doesn't exist. People get their ideas from the movies and books.

Bi Polar people usually dont realize that they have more then one personality. Usually its just different emotions overwhelming the person and some times they act one way with one person and other way with other people.
