Is it because they're ignorant? Do people not know that it's been an abbreviation for "Christos" (X is the Greek letter "chi") for well over a thousand years? Or is it just because they want a reason to be offended? If you personally are offended by it, is it for one of the reasons I gave or something different?

because they feel like you are taking "Christ" out of Christmas, the thing is- He was never there in the first place!
Some people look for reasons to be offended- For the most part , Christians in America have no clue what persecution is- they have to find a way to be able to claim persecution

People, including me, get offended by "Xmas" because it removes "Christ" from "Christmas", and Jesus Christ is what the holiday is all about. The only reason that the abbreviation has come into common use now is because of people trying to make it a religiously nuetral commercial holiday. It has nothing to do with any claimed abbreviation from Greek.

I second Natalie- 100%-- you sound offended yourself...? or bitter...not everyone would know X is the Greek letter for 'chi' -so consider yourself fortunate for that kind of education and leave it at that- With this knowledge you could have the opportunity to share it in a noncondiscending way...it's your choice-unfortunately sometimes education leads to pride and you look down your nose at those that don't know--they should be offended for that rather than not knowing the greek letter...
try to spread good with what you know.

C.K. you are so right on. ********* refers to being cheap; unwilling to expend emotions, money, or time: The term has nothing to do with a race or culture of people.

Christmas is a traditional holiday marking the birth of Jesus, a date many historians and religious leaders disagree on. We, in the U.S., celebrate the birth of Jesus on December 25. This date has been "Congressionally" set, and unless the U.S. Government, backed by the vote of the people, decide to change this date, it will remain December 25.

To debate whether the birthday of Jesus should be called Christmas of Xmas, just goes to show how petty people can be. Jesus did not promote pettiness and jealousy. He promoted love and respect among all. The shortest verse in the Bible is, "Love One Another".

If a person, or family's celebration of the birth of Jesus only centers around a spelling, they are missing the biblical importance of the birth and life of Jesus.

I like to use abbreviations too but on this matter I feel bad being too lazy to write the entire word CHRISTMAS. Because Christ is the reason for CHRISTmas.
I don't get offended when I see it, I just write the entire word.

I'm not sure why someone would be offended by Xmas. Who cares how you spell it? It means the same damn thing. Some Xtian ppl are just strange. By the way, the word 'ignorant' means someone who doesn't know.

The reason that people get offended by "xmas" is that it takes "Christ" out of the word. Christmas is Christ's birthday, first and foremost. It's not Santa's day. Santa was devised by Coca Cola for advertising purposes years ago and is not the reason we celebrate Christmas. We celebrate Christmas to celebrate Christ's birth and to take His name out of the holiday is very offensive to Christians. By putting an "X" in the name, it's almost as if you are denouncing His name or choosing not to recognize the birth of Jesus Christ. If you aren't going to take the day seriously then please do not celebrate it. It's a religious holiday and taken very seriously by Christians.

As long the X-men are also called Christmen.

The problem is that "X" in English is not pronounce "Christ".

And also using Xmas, some felt Christmas are even more marginalized.

Now if you use "Marked Commune" or just plain "M.C.", it might be truer.

It is because you are x-ing out the CHRIST part. Yes, it actually does offend me because Christ is the reason for Christmas and people cannot take the two seconds it uses to actually write the Christ part. It just shows huge amounts of laziness and disrespect.
