I used to think I was a dog person until my dogs died and a little helpless kitten found it's way into my life. I bought "Cats for Dummies" since I didn't know anything about cats. Since then I realized that the right pet, cat, dog, or whatever depends on your lifestyle. Dogs require more time, energy, and training. Cats are easier as they can take care of themselves more and don't need you as much. Either way both cats and dogs will love you and give you a lot of laughter.

I'm not a cat person either (even though I have 2......they are my daughters!) I find that dogs have more of a personality than cats do. Although cat lovers might disagree! Cats are more loners and they take care of themselves. Dogs on the other hand, want to please their owners and protect them if they could. From the sounds of it, you are a dog lover, not a cat lover. So, go with your instincts. I'm not saying having a cat or dog is better.....it just all depends on the person.

Since you don't like cats, the answer seems fairly simple! For heaven's sake, don't get a cat if you don't like them! Dogs & cats are VERY different. I've loved both, but I've been a "cat" person for many years now. If you tend to be "controlling," get a dog. They'll do anything for a treat, & put up with anything, & learn to play "tricks" on command. (They can also be very loving.) Cats are more like people; they have moods; if they don't feell like being "picked up" they'll let you know, (wouldn't you?) & are incredibly sensitive to your feelings. More intelligent, as well. If you ever "bonded" with a cat, you'd know. I can't imagine why I answered this question, since YOU DON'T LIKE CATS. Please don't get one!

:) Birds. Specifically, Macaws.

My argument is as follows:

Cats, they're cool. Really. Fluffy, cuddly, independent, you don't have to walk them or take them outside. They're great. But, they have attitudes, quite similar to that of a pissed off Grandma. If they're mad, you'll hear about it until they're on to their next drama. Then, there's also the issue of the "presents" they like to leave. Like, for instance the mouse I found lying on the floor between Princess Fi-Fi's paws, squeaking for mercy. I had to rescue that poor thing, and she was more than a little pissed at me for weeks. Cats are cool, but they're just not nearly as interesting as...

Dogs. Dogs are great in a lot of different ways. Dogs have more intelligence than cats in that they can work (I happen to also run a search and rescue organization who employs the use of trailing dogs, cadaver dogs, airscent dogs, etc.). Those dogs are happy to be working, and fufill a great need for the community. But, then there's the issue of taking them outside, usually at THE most inopportune times. Like, say, just after you get out of the shower and put your jammies on. And it's snowing outside. That, is just not my idea of a good time. But, you do have the added benefit of having a protective companion in the home with you, and that's kind of cool. They can fetch newspapers, balls, play with toys, and they'll love you, pretty much no matter how awful your day has been or how bad you screwed up, but...

Birds, are far superior to both cats AND dogs. And, I'll tell you why. First, they can talk to you. My Macaw, Rio is my best friend. He tells me what's on his mind, I can tell him what's on mine, and he's just way cool. I can cuddle him, just like a cat or dog, I can take him with me whereever I go (except the grocery store, we tried that and they didn't buy the "seeing eye bird" excuse), and we always get a crowd of people asking questions about him, which of course is awesome because in his majestic coolness, people are drawn to him, and then are curious enough to want to be educated on the ins and outs of bird ownership and what all he can do. When he's mad, he swears. When he's happy, he sings. (sometimes it's rap, sometimes it's you are my sunshine...) And, the most important part of our relationship is that it's give and take. You don't ever just get to have a bird, and keep a bird. You will always work hard, be challenged every single day, and earn the respect and trust that is a major two way street.

I'll probably never own my own dog again. I do have Princess Fi-Fi, our Persian, but she's made it clear that she owns me. With Rio, it's a two way street. He's a 5 year old child, with a can-opener attached to his face. I love him as dearly as I do my own children!

So...Yeah. That's my final answer.

A cat is better. They can go to a litter box instead of outside in the winter. Some of them require less grooming than dogs. They are quieter and not as messy as a dog could be.

Its not a question of superiority. It is soley a question of which suits you better. There are dog people. There are cat people. There are freaks like me who can't live without either. Responsible pet owners are just plain awesome, no matter what genus your pet belongs to!
