A lot of times they don't call you....the best thing to do is call them! That lets them know you are double interested. Apps get lost in the shuffle all the time, your best bet is to contact them directly about its status. The worst they could tell you is that they don't need that position filled any more.

Answer the following question:
Were they advertising a position, or did you simply walk in and ask for an application?
If they advertised the position, they may be reviewing the applications, possibly already made a decision, or are about to make a decision. In that case, call them, or go into the store again and ask if you can speak to the manager and inquire about your status.
If the job wasn't advertised, they may not have called you because they simply are not hiring anyone at the moment. In this case, it is very important to go into the store and talk with the manager and express your seriousness about wanting to work there. Often times applications are just put in a drawer and forgotten, and when it comes time to fill a position, they only look at the top few and call them. Ask when they may be hiring and what else you could do.

It means, you dropped off your application on Friday and it is now Wednesday.
But seriously, Dress to impress, take a copy of your resume, go down to the location and ask to speak to the hiring manager. Let him know you are very interested in working for them, ask "What would be a good time to come in for an interview?" Offer a copy of your resume and references.

No not always. It could mean they have been busy (Season) and haven't gotten to you (application) yet. If you want to find out for sure what is going on, call them and ask if they have gotten your application yet and if there are any questions you can answer for them. If they try to blow you off politely ask when you can call back again to check the progress. This way you can find out if they have seen your application and you can also find out if where you stand.
