I was doing hills today, and at the very end of my workout, being as tired as I was, I tripped and fell going down a rocky slope and bounced down landing on my leg, and twisting my ankle. It hurt like hell for a few minutes and then subsided into a dull/sharp (somehow both) pain. It hurts to take a step on either of my ankles and I have to drag my left leg practically. Normally I wouldn't be so concerned, its just the track season is coming up and I have been training unbelievably hard -it would be my luck that I'd get a small fracture or something and find out by breaking my foot in the first race of the season. Anything I can do to help heal it, and what should I be looking for.

Unless there is an obvious deformity - Don't panic. The injury is fresh. It is going to hurt like hell. That's a good thing - forces you to rest it. The adivce that has been previously given about "RICE" and that is good advice. Give it a day or two and see how it responds to your home treatment. Simple strains/sprains should feel significantly better in a week or so. If the pain persists, then see your health care practitioner. Worse case scenario, you've fractured and displaced a bone or completely torn a ligament: both cases need to be immobilized (casted) and possibly reduced and fixated (pins and screws). You can expect to be out of action for at least 3 months. Best case scenario: you've mildly sprained a ligament and will be out for a few weeks.

The advice about icing is good. I am sure you have heard of the acronym RICE, rest, ice, compression and elevation. Those things are valuable even after the first 24 hours since the injury.
An x-ray may give you peace of mind about not being broken, but probably I would say to treat it like a sprain first and see if it responds to RICE. You are going to want to tape that ankle as basketball players do, once you start training again.

First off Get ice on it to reduce swelling and then consult a Doctor to have an x ray done. They may need to immobilize it till your bone is well. or you could have torn a muscle. I have found that with leg injuries it is better to get them checked out.

I have had 2 broken legs
2 leg surgeries for torn cartilage and lateral release,
1 torn plantis tendon (hurts like all get out and thought it was broken) I was off work for 4 months.

I pray you are not seriously injured but you should have a professional check it out.
