The browser can't get a virus, but a virus can get to your PC through the browser. There are undiscovered places in the browser that virus can get through, that's why browser has to get update everytime a hole is found. A virus also can get to your PC from your actions like clicking on a ads/link or by downloading software.

Your question is a bit incorrect: your computer can get some virus through your browser, especially if you click on suspicious link.
Note that most viruses are written to enter your PC via IE. Just move to some other browser - Mozelle, Opera, etc.
