Tonight, all of a sudden I had no hot water. I had hot water for my shower earlier, now when I go to wash dishes theres very low pressure and no hot water. I have a gas water heater which is hot and the pilot is on. Nothing is hot except towards the bottom around the pilot. What do I do?

You say there was hot water for your shower, but now there is none. How about cold water? How is the pressure? You also state that the water heater is hot on the bottom. This is strange, since hot water would rise to the top of the heater. Cold water enters the top of the heater, but is directed down to the bottom by a plastic tube inside your tank. Hot water rises to the top and out through the line on the left, usually the one with no valve attached to it. If you touch this pipe it should be hot. If it isn't, there is a problem. Try turning the thermostat up to a hotter setting, and see if the main burner comes on. If it doesn't, your control valve might be faulty. Since you say the pilot is lit, this tells me the thermocouple is working. You should call a plumber to come check it out.

There are a lot of issues to consider here.
The age of the tank.
Is your water pipes made of Iron or copper or plastic pipe.
Is there water pressure else where in the home.
With so many issues to consider, I recommend calling a professional plumber.
Most good plumbers will quote a service call price to come out, and possibly a reasonable diagnostic fee to find the problem.
Good Luck.

please take a look at your pump. it heating the water but not pumping it thru fro m the heater , you could have a leak in a pipe ,or the cold water that really pushs pressure to send the hot water is leaking or clogged, if you cant find it , look at your water meter with all the water ,OFF if the little dial is still goign around you have a leak ,if not look closer to the heater for water spots.....

You have a water leak some where you can shut off all the water in your House and go to the front of your house and find your water meter usually at the front sidewalk and see if the meter is moving. if it is you need to get the water shut off before any damage happens.
