Dog breeds evolved because man selectively bred them to perform specific jobs - hunting, retrieving, guarding, herding, ratting, tracking, pulling, etc. That's why there's such a wide variety of dog breeds, and also why dog breeds are not "interchangeable" - they have been bred to do specific things, so they have different needs, and people need to know that before selecting a dog.
Cats have been developed primarily for looks, so there isn't as much diversity as far as the number of breeds. But there *are* a lot of cat breeds out there, if you look. Siamese, Persian, Himalayan, Sphinx, Abbysinian, Norwegian Forest, Snowshoe, etc. etc. etc.

It takes time , resources ,and lots of dedication and should be done by those who have genetical training.MAny years of line breeding , inbreeding , and family breeding takes place before the breed caractorectics are set.In order to get a new breed registered through Akc , There are strengent rerequirements by the AKC and some times it takes years , if ever , before aproval. A good example in dogs are the cockapoo ' pickapoo ect.

Oh there are lots of BREEDS of cats. They are all the same species, just as different dog breeds are of the same species. Visit the Cat Fanciers Association at http://www.cfainc.org/ for more info on different breeds of cats.

There are lots of cat varieties, but I suppose they are less noticeable bacause cats are mostly the same size. And many, if not most, are truly DSH - domestic short hair. And the "mutts". But coat and shape differences abound. Persian, Siamese, Manx, Van, Burmese, Ragdoll, etc etc
Do a search for "cat breeds" and you might really enjoy the pcitures.

There are several different breeds of cats. But there are probably more dog breeds because people have tried to play God by mixing and matching different aspects from different dog breeds in order to create their idea of "the perfect dog". Cats are already perfect.

We have worked harder to develop more strains of dogs because we use them for work as well as companions. Cats have always been and probably always will be purely ornamental companions.
