I mean if we wanted to collonize something I think the moon should be the first obv choice and not mars what do ya think? I believe by the time we are ready to collonize a planet nanotechnology will be up and running and we will have abilitys we dont have thoughts about now. So it just makes sense that we start with something closer then mars and something we know more about? Plus the moons smallness might actualy make it better for collonizing in some ways.

NASA announced a few weeks ago that it wants to build a permanent base on the moon in order to launch a flight to mars from.
I've listed a CNN report on it below.

We can never colonize either in the conventional sense because they do not support life and lack the resources necessary to artificially support life. Hence anyone who lives there will be supported from Earth. Although Mars probably has a smaller resource deficit than the moon, it is also much further away, so clearly it would be easier to "colonise" the moon. However, its less sexy and this whole thing is about politics and winning grants not practicality and science. In scientific terms, colonising either is more or less pointless.

NASA is planning a moon base. More so as a docking/refueling station for long term flights. Mars has frozen caps and may contain ice (water) which would make it the more obvious choice not to mention the fact that Mars has an atmosphere.

Nasa plans on having a permanent colony on the Moon by 2030. It would by no means serve as a "second earth", as it has no verifiable resources.

martian soil would be better for crops, but you'd have to get the magnetic field back to preserve your newly created synthetic atmosphere like on Total Recall (grin)

We needs lots of water so we can brew beer. There is no proof of enough water on the moon to make a go of it.
