+ The Winchester place in CA is strange , but the House of SEVEN gables is much stranger with the secret passages and stuff. I think it is in Salem MA. Somewhere near there anyway. See the link below.

The strangest, weirdest historical home I have even been to in the United States is the home of Joseph "Rich Joe" Vann, son of James Vann, a Cherokee Chief killed in a tavern brawl.

The Vann Home is located in Springplace, Georgia, not far from the infamous Andersonville Prison.

Joseph Vann inherited the "plantation" and over 90 black slaves, after the death of his father, James. The house has been restored by the State of Georgia and stands as a tribute to the people of the Cherokee Nation before their removal through the Trail of Tears. Unfortunately, the legacy of the Vanns also speaks to the inhumanity even the Cherokees visited upon the blacks. Many prominent Cherokee owned slaves, cohabited with them, even loosely married, and fathered children with them.

In the "lower regions" of the Vann House, are rooms similar to the dungeons of English prisons and the "hole" at Alcatraz.

The most amazing architectural feature of the Vann House is the cantilevered staircase ascending from the first floor to the second. No one has, to this day, successfully determined how this staircase sustains itself. Architectually, it is an impossibility; yet, there it stands.
