Russian fireplaces differ from ones in North America because they use a downdraft system. The fireplace is airtight and instead of the throat being on the top, it is slightly below the fire. The reason for this is to provide for maximum heat output, needing very short hot fires rather than long, lower heat fires.

Its design allows for the heat and smoke to rise, double heating the smoke to eliminate a lot of emissions, and using natural convection to draw the smoke back down to the throat and up the chimney.

They are much better and way more efficient than our fireplaces here. Unfortunately they are not catching on very quickly here, even though they have been used for centuries in Russia. I have only ever inspected the installation of 2 of these fireplace.

Well, you see it's this place where you can stack logs up, and then you set them on fire.. but it's in Russia.
