It's a loaded topic. People have usually had some pretty memorable experiences regarding rascism, most of them not good. It's also going back to the issue of power and privilege. A conversation about race in a group where there is an imbalance of power and privilege is going to push a lot of buttons.

Also pay attention to group dynamics. Depending on the makeup of the group you'll get a different conversation. If the group is all white, if there's only one person of color in the group, if several different races are represented, etc etc. That plays a huge role in who chooses to be quiet and who chooses to speak.

Sorry that I don't have an easy answer for you, but rascism is is messy to begin with. There's not going to be an easy answer. If you want to do some reading up on it on your own take a look at some books about social justice. It'll really get your head spinning then! :)

Depends on the context. Sometimes it gets petty and annoying.

My principle is what I call the race independence test. Analyze a situation pretending the race difference was not there and ask whether it would happen the same way. Alot of times the answer is yes.

Funny story there.

There was 6 year old girl named Isis talking to US senator.

He told her her name meant dirty girl. This got in the press.

The NACC (or whatever) complained. They started saying, if the girl was white, would he have said the same thing.

The irony is of course they were unaware that the girl WAS in fact white!!!

Because most people don't have the balls to say how the REALLY feel about the subject. So they just shut up.

because people are afraid to be labeled at racists. i am the same way, people need to talk about these things, otherwise they will sadly always be taboo.

I believe there are two reasons. Either they are afraid of being accused of being a racist, or they're afraid someone will find out they are a racist.
