No salt here, which is so much easier on cars - no rust here! They use sand and the latest remedy "Mag Chloride" (magnesium chloride) which they apply before the snow hits. It is supposed to last 48 hours and stop the moisture from freezing into ice. Some people complain that it hurts the finish on their cars, but if it's applied correctly, it really does help!

Everybody uses salt to keep the highways driveable at winter.

Otherwise you will have a lot of accidents.

Denver- prior to 1996 used sand/salt mixtures. The evaluation was that it was injurious to vegetationand was corrosive to vehicle bodies. 1996 - have partially changed to magnesium chloride deicing.

Magnesium chloride is still salt, there are a few other types, it doesnt have to always be only sodium chloride.

I believe sand is the car-friendly and updated item to use on icy roads.

When I lived there no, they did not use salt. They used sand.
