The Birdcage. Nathan Lane's character Albert was wonderful. And when Gene Hackman dressed up like a woman, not bad for a straight guy. And Dianne Wiest is the best and that dominatrix outfit was really cute on her. The original in French, La Cage Aux Folles is one that should be shown again. No matter if you understand French or not, it is a very funny movie. These are movies that made it into mainstream straight America, and Europe. So if a few homophobes can watch these and smile, then that says something to me. It's a start with tolerance. Merry Christmas Everyone.

Willow Rosenberg (played by Alyson Hannigan) in Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV Series.

I think the character is one of the most realistic lesbians I've seen from a TV show or movie. When I say "realistic" I'm talking about the character in general, not the magic-use or the supernatural environment. Willow wasn't depicted in the usual hollywood style stereotypes like lesbians in most other movies/TV shows.

She wasn't the "Sultry Lesbian", using typical Hollywood T&A ploys trying to seduce every other female character for entertainment value. Willow was a shy, sweet girl, and not overtly sexual when it came to her relationships with men and she was the same with her relationships with women. Just because there was a change in her sexuality doesn't mean she's going to automatically change her attitudes on sex and relationships at the same time, no one does this in real life, and the writers stayed true to that fact and didn't turn her into a super-sexual being when they went the lesbian route for developing the character.

Granted, a stereotypical "sultry lesbian" version of Willow was still shown with the appearance of a "Vampire Willow" (from an alternate dimention as part of an episode plotline), but the "sultry lesbian" stereotype was acceptable because it actually fit the personality for "Vampire Willow" since vampires are suposed to be seductive and super-sexual in social settings (bars, nightclubs, etc) to find human victims they can feed on.

Plus, she wasn't an "Instant Lesbian", automatically starting out that way in the very begining of the series. Like in real life, Willow's sexuality was developed over time as part of the character's growth from her experiences and past relationships.

I would have to say Uncle Aurthur from Bewitched. He was never overtly out, but with Paul Lynde as the actor, how could he not be gay!? LOL

Now I know once I submit this and then look over the answers of others, there will be a dozen answers I'll read and I'll say, "Oh! I should have thought of that."

I always loved Frank Nelson. He was the totally gay store clerk in many I Love Lucy Episodes and the Jack Benny Program. He would always be facing away from the main character. Lucy or Jack would walk up to the counter and Frank would turn around and say, "Yesssssssssss?"!!!! Then he would always have a hint of sarcasm to his voice.... Come-on.... he's got to be gay!!!

I like characters like him because he is stereotypical. There is no mention of his sexuality but we love him because he is Witty, funny, silly... Great Comic Relief!

Will Rabjohns from the book "Sacrament" by Clive Barker. I wish I could know him, if he were real. Barker creates the most amazing characters.

Karen Black who plays a m2f sex change in "come back to the five and dime jimmy dean, jimmy dean'---just 'cause I think the acting by Sandy Dennis, Kathy Bates and Cher to be some of their best acting (certainly Cher's best).

Anna Madrigal in tales of the city. She was loveable, fun, mysterious. Dukakis did a great job playing her. Plus, she cared for other people and helped them do better and understand their own lives.
