I used to try and stop procrastinating on things. It didn't work and now I don't even try. I think I know why it didn't work. I was focused on stopping the wrong part.

Rather than stopping my procrastination on one thing at a time, I want to stop it as a whole way of being... but I keep procrastinating doing that.

Fixing Procrastination

The payoff you receive for procrastinating is most likely the reason why you find yourself repeating the pattern. Procrastinators put off tasks until the very last possible moment because, at that l a s t moment, there is a burst of energy from adrenaline and neurotransmitters released in response to the extreme stress the brain is under. Procrastinators get a natural high, a natural euphoria, by waiting until there is no more time to wait for completing the task, if he/she wants to succeed. Many procrastinators are known for saying, "I do my best work under pressure." That is actually not the truth, but it justifies the waiting as a worthy cause. The fact that you are feeling so tired and would rather not do the work right away is another factor. If you are tired all of the time, it may be that you unknowingly look forward to the rush at the last minute because you need a lift out of the typical daily fatigue. I've learned the hard way that early and steady preparation actually prevents the daily fatigue to some extent....I get a "second wind," a new burst of energy because I'm tackling something that is hard and I know I will conquer the task. Now THAT brings a REALLY good feeling....and it is MUCH better than the last-minute stressed-out energy lift and subsequent energy crash. (Okay, Saccade, be nice!) Consistency is what your body needs, what your brain needs, and what you as an individual need to find escape from the ever-present mental fatigue.

haha.... u hav the exact same issues as me..... i think we are cursed....

what i believe needs to happen is fail....... sorry but it has to happen....

i procrastinate with assignments and such to the extent that i actually do 1000 word essays the morning before..... sometimes i leave finishing it to the period before [in high school].... which is really bad.......
the thing is i still manage great marks for them.... sometimes top marks..... and because of this i just continue with the subconscious mentality that i will succeed anyway.....
so if i fail..... get really bad.... this mentality should change...... maybe that is what needs to happen with you.....

but if you want to do it with out failing you can try this other method which usually doesnt work because it is more proactive and you would put off starting it.....
what you have to do is fill your schedule...... give everything a specific time slot and dont leave any free time or try filling things with useless tasks..... fill every moment you have at your desposal with important things..... if you dont have that many important things.... start some things up.....
part of the mentality of a procrastinator is that there is always more time later....... if there isnt.... u cant exactly try to procrastinate......

to start u off ill cut ur time down..... "what if you are going to die tomorrow???"

Haha procrastination has always been a problem to any college students, here's some tips for you :)

Being interested in what you do is a way to get motivated. Have you ever procrastinated on having fun with your friends or watching your favorite film, playing your favorite sport? It’s because doing what you enjoy is pleasurable, and that makes Rex happy. The more you love what you’re doing, the less procrastinating you will be :)

If you think your schoolwork is too boring now, that’s just a normal thing. Even if you choose to study in your favorite major, you still have those assignments that you don’t have the willingness to finish. Are you surprised when I tell you that most of the US students hate most of their classes? This is life, you can’t choose what happens to you all the time, but you can still choose to make your work more interesting. Here’re some tips to kick-off:

- Listen to music. I usually listen to non-lyric productive songs on YouTube to increase my concentration.

- Have a reward. There’s a girl telling me that "I need to finish my homework first then I can date my boyfriend or talk to him on the phone".

- Take a break. Working non-stop is unproductive and will cause you stressed. For every 90 minutes working, take a short rest of 10 – 15 minutes to renew your energy.

Tell yourself that you will stop procrastinating at the count of ten. Then count real slow.
Then tell me if it works. :)

Your question reminds me of a similar problem I'm faced with, namely, how do I remember not to forget to remember to not forget to remember.... whatever it was I was supposed to not forget?

Post-it notes and pocket notepads are helping quite a bit. If I could just remember to bring them along each day. Maybe THAT'S what I was supposed to remember not to forget: my note pad.

break large goals into easy itty bitty baby steps.
do you least favourite thing first.
reward yourself sometimes.
time yourself and find out how long things really take to do.
are you a perfectionist? that might slow you down too.

Make lists. And have lists for your lists. Lists help remind me of what I need to do. Buy a daily planner and make notations about what you need to get done and when.
