I played Battleship with my brother yesterday and he kicked my but (royaly). We played about 15 games and he beat me 90% of thge time. Is this game built on luck...or strategy? If you know any good strategies (besides not attacking in the same area all the time (obviouse(duh))) then please share them.

Thanks for the help everyone.

mostly luck, but not placing your ship next to eachother helps. but there is no strategy.

When you're looking for the last ship or two, always keep in mind how many spaces long the ship is, and fire on spots that would eliminate large areas as possibilities if it were a miss. It's hard to do without pictures, though. I'll try below:

oooooo
oooxoo
ooxoxx
oox1oo

In the image above firing at the spot labelled 1 and missing will tell you that a 3-space ship cannot be vertically or horizontally in that lower-right area. Look for opportunities during the game to eliminate large areas of possibilities like this.

Place your large ships more towards the edge, and aim for the edge. Although there is a fair share of luck, it still requires skill to know where to fire and where to place your ships.

Place your ships at least 2 squares away from each other, too. Also, first decide which ship you want to target first. For example, if you're aiming for a carrier (5 squares), then fire so that there are 4 unbombed shots between shots.

When I play, I try to space my ships away from each other and avoid having even remotely a "usual" pattern to them. When "firing" I use an every-other-space pattern. I've learned it is better to scatter "shots" and not finish a row or column in my firing pattern.

It's mostly luck, with a touch of strategy, like Monopoly.

Secretly move your battleships when he calls out a number. Guaranteed to win. I'm sure that is what he does.
