She would have been submissive, like his mother, and he wouldn't have had all the family problems like he did with Kate. His son probably would have been groomed to be the next Godfather.

As many have said, Michael didn't know he was going back to the States. The killing of the Police chief was his first act of violence outside of the war. The tension in that scene shows how big a decision it was to Michael, a life changing decision. He goes to Sicily with all that on his mind. Apollonia is meant to be Michael's soul mate. they hardly exchange words and yet seem comfortable with one another. Her death is the primary reason for their meeting, in terms of the drama I mean. When she dies at the hands of the mob, the old Michael dies. She represents his soul or his spirit(isn't she dressed in white when they meet?) Her death symbolises a spiritual death in side Michael. It is the first act in his long downfall, which finishes with him killing Fredo. In terms of the drama, they meet just so she can be killed off. her death is important in showing why Michael goes from being the gentle war veteran to being the head of the family. Kay becomes, to my interpretation, almost a wise business decision he makes. In other words, proposing to Kay is a cold act, an act that enables him not to love her, but to use her as a symbol of normality, an afront, a facade to hide the reality of his murderous life.

It would have been a much better movie. Diane Keaton totally killed that movie. Apollonia wouldn't have whined about him being a criminal.

He would have had the "right" wife for his role in the family. She wouldn't have challenged him, everything probably would have been smooth sailing. Things would have stayed how they always were and she would know her place in the family.

He would probably been much happier with a wife that understood his culture, and needs.
