For most people, the american dream is to have a home, family, sufficient means of life, and to die happy. George Bailey desired that too, but when things started to fall apart, he lost the dream and entered a world of despair.

You could say the movie subverts the American Dream. George Bailey is a failure when it comes to material things. Even by the time the movie is out, he's still just scraping by financially, due to the generosity of the townsfolk.

However, he learns what is truly important - integrity, community, family, helping others.

A house, a job, a family. That is the american dream, and George gave that opportunity to all that he touched with the Building and Loan
