Back in those days, African-Americans were only allowed to be servants in communities like East Egg. They would never have been accepted as property owners, let alone neighbors. If Jay Gatsby was black, the story would have a different setting. Most likely Harlem instead of a small enclave of the rich outside New York City.

It might have worked, but due to the attitudes of the white Americans of the time, the book would not have been widely read. It was just the way things were back then. Thankfully, racist attitudes have died down quite a bit.
