Are silverfish the only types of bugs that can ravage a wardrobe or library? How can you prevent them from getting into your things, and where do they come from in the first place?

Cardboard boxes attract silverfish. You need to get rid of any cardboard boxes and use plastic totes to store your things in. Your books are paper and attact silverfish as well, so store those away in totes also or at least get them out of the closet on shelves. Pull everything out vaccum the closet, and spray bug spray along the bottom of the closet and the baseboards of your home, and shut the closet doors for 24 hours. Take your clothes and wash and throw them in the dryer to kill any silverfish and eggs.This should get rid of them.

I find that if I keep the house clean and vacuumed I see them a lot less. I live in an old cabin in a rural environment and I know they're probably all over outside but if I keep the house clean I don't seem to find them in the house.
If you have a really bad infestation you could try insecticide or call an exterminator. You could also try diatomacious earth, but read up on it first. I use the dia earth in the bottom of my woodbox to keep the bug population down.

They like moisture. If you can eliminate moisture from your closet they'll go away.
You can also use diatomaceous earth scattered into the corners and along the edges. (this is safe for people and pets, only bad for insects) Get it at pool supply houses or feed stores.

Put cedar wood chips in the closet, be sure to put them in a cotton bag.
