Never make a promise or a threat that you can't or won't (or which would be dangerous or unethical to) follow through on. Especially to a child. Say what you really mean, mean what you actually say, and people will have reason to believe and trust what you say.

If you give children idle threats, or repeat them too many times before carrying throg with the consequences, they learn not to believe you, or that they don't really have to listen until you get extremely angry. As a result, they will either ignore you, or test your limits constantly.
