I am a Labor & Delivery RN. The umbilical cord is very strong and can usually withstand alot of "Normal" tugging and pressure that is caused during a routine delivery. I have at one time seen a mother get up to the bathroom for a bowel movement, she screamed, she was standing, the baby was on the floor, blood was going everywhere. She had pushed the baby out when she was using the bathroom. The cord did break. The baby and the mother were just fine. We just tied the cords off and all was well. This is not a normal routine happening.
If I were you, I would not worry about such things. You need to make sure you are receiving Prenatal Care from a Doctor and taking care of your self for the health of your unborn child. The doctor and nurses at delivery will take proper care of you.

No way an umbilical cord will ever snap or break. You can barely cut through them using the special scissors. They are tougher than anything you can possibly imagine, you couldn't tear one if you tried. It has become part of the baby, which is why it has to be cut off, it's not attached like with a snap or button that will just pop off with a twist. It does come unattached from the maternal side, after the baby is born, and it can come unattached during delivery. In that case, there is a lot of bleeding- but it is a problem for the mother, not the child. The same kind of bleeding can happen after delivery, if the entire unbilical cord is not removed or delivered after the baby. In that case, a doctor will go back in and manually remove the parts left. During the delivery of the umbilical cord, you actually pull on it gently to encourage it to separate from the uterus and be delivered. It stops functioning shortly after the baby is born, usually within a few minutes, and is of no use to either one. I had to learn to do emergency deliveries, and have done a few times, plus assisted in numerous other deliveries, and delivered 6 of my own. One of the biggest surprises I had was learning exactly how tough an umbilical cord is. In the movies they make it seem like a quick snip, easy done and over with. In reality, it's like sawing through the toughest bit of rubbery stuff going. It takes some serious work to cut, so I can't imagine it would ever, ever just break or snap apart.

Nope. When my son was born I actually got to feel it...it's pretty thick. I don't think it could break easily inside.
