At 80,000 miles you are at about half the car's useful life. Take that into consideration. At 150,000 miles the 02 Focus starts to come unglued. Loss of engine compression or dropped valve seats are the usual failures, followed closely by alternators, hub or axle bearings and other minor electrical problems.

With perfect maintenance from the day it was bought new and lots of luck, it could last to 150,000 miles like the Ford mechanic said.
Odds are it won't last anywhere near that long however. It's a better engineered car than the Escort it replaced, but a late model Escort is statisitically more reliable.
If you care about reliability at all, you would be a lot better off not buying (or getting rid of) this car and finding yourself a Toyota or a Honda. A beat to sh*t Toyota corolla with 80,000 miles on it would be a better choice than a shiny Focus with 30,000 miles on it honestly.

Ahhh it's a piece of junk. Seen one in an accident. It just crumbles like a tin can.
