A reasonable person, hirny or not, would need to get to know the person first and see if they have any same sex inclinations at all before jumping into this,
Of course, getting to know someone first is a pretty darn good idea before getting sexual, gender aside.
You also should consider that you don't need to act out every fantasy or attraction that occurs to you. As you say, this is your roommate, and just jumping into this is not likely to be a good idea.

I think you need to clarify BOTH person's sexual preference first. Well, if you are confused and looking to find out, make sure he is either confused and wanting to explore, or gay/bi.
Does that make sense? If the gaydar isn't working too well, seek out gay men in more obvious places.
Actually, your roommate may be the worst option you have. Maybe seek out men looking to explore in other places. Like Walmart.

when i dont know if he's gay, bi or strauight but all i know all guys masturbate. Ask him if he's interested into looking pornography, if so just look at it and see if he's rubbing on his pants or something. Or another method is show him if he's interested by watching porn movies, and see if there's any movements or actions with him.
