It feels like, especially now with NCLB, that there is a lot of talk about the need to hold teachers "accountable." I know that there are some teachers out there who are not doing their jobs, but is it fair to put all of the blame on their shoulders? What about administrators, parents, the community, etc?

Also, do you think that standardized tests measure student acheivement accurately? I think that if we as teachers are doing our jobs, and are teaching to the standards of our fields, then our students should pass standardized tests if they really measure what students need to know. So why all this teaching to the tests?

Teachers are taking an unrealistic part of the blame for student failures and the NCLB has no accountability for the students or parents, just loopholes for them. THink of how much different it would be if that law were modified to say that only students who are in school more than 90 percent of the time can claim the tutoring and help - lets face it if they are not there to take advantage of the regular schooling, how can the teacher and school be accountable? That is up to the parent and the student.

Until the student is made accountable for his tests, I don't think there is anything the teacher can do to guarantee that the student will actually do his best. In Oklahoma there is no repercussions on the student only on the teacher.

You must be a rookie teacher, or you wouldn't ask such questions. No offense meant by that comment. Look at it this way: if your job (that pays your bills) and your school are on the line, wouldn't you be teaching to the test?

Also, you forgot one important factor: the students. We can do our jobs, teach to the standards, but that means squat because in the end, it's up to the kids.

I use to. Then I stopped enrolling dysfunctional kids now I don't have those issues.

Management and proper accountability for all students is needed in any sound program that is offered.
