I have been using spyware doctor for a year, it works great. I also use these.

All of these are ones that I personally use and all are free. After you install any of them, make sure you update them to get the full affect.

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

Take it you've got a firewall.
Try either AVG or Avast! - free to download and update - as an anti-virus, but only run ONE anti-virus, otherwise they'll fight!

Try Ad-Aware SE Personal anti-adware - free again to download and efficient.

Once you've got 'em installed, update them, then reboot to Safe Mode (constantly tap F8 while the machine's booting) and run the software in that mode.

You might also like to consider Ccleaner (crap cleaner), again free on line, and an excellent "clean-up" program.

By the way, if you try Symantec's on line checkup you'll find it will never acknowledge you have anti-virus unless it's Norton - it's because they want to flog it to you!

I used AVG 7.5, but it is not free and I do not like it warns about virus threats so many times that it make me difficult to finish a job. I use only BT YAHOO.
I am very confused with these anti virus soft wares.
