During the past 65 years (I have been going to, and watching movies, since I was 5) there have been many movies that touched me in one way or another; but to choose one as THE BEST would be impossible.

Some of my all-time favorites, ones I have watched more than 20 times are: Abbott and Costello Meet the Werewolf, Abbott and Costello Meet Dracula, Wolf Man, starring Lon Chaney, Jr., Wolf Man Meets Dracula, Frankenstein, starring Boris Karloff, Gone With the Wind, It's A Wonderful Life, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Miracle on 34th Street, The Godfather movies, Good Morning Vietnam, Apocolypse Now, The Last of the Mohicans, with Daniel Day Lewis, Pulp Fiction, Las Vegas, Fargo,The Gangs of New York, and all the James Bond movies with Sean Connery.

I grew up with Saturday movie serials: Lash Larue, Red Ryder, Hopalong Cassidy, Superman.

Best alludes to "surpassing all others". What is the "best" flower? What is the "best" perfume? What is the "best" canned green bean? Who is the "best" U.S. President ever? What is the "best" beer?

Quantifying the largest, smallest, highest, shortest, heaviest, lightest, is simply a matter of scientific measurement. Quantifying anything beyond acknowledged scientific measurement is not possible. Determining the movie "best loved", "most watched", etc., could be statistically validated through surveys; but, most surveys only target a specific number of people, from a specific economic and cultural background.

If you surveyed only Mexicans, would Viva Zapata, starring Marlon Brando, be the "best" movie ever?

Sound of Music, My Fair Lady, Star Wars, Enter the Dragon,
(1st) Zorro movie, Dune, 13th Warrior, The Matrix, Transporter 1&2, V for Vendetta, Man on Fire and others.

Older movies kept the audience's attention by creating very interesting characters and story plots. Today, the characters tend to be pretty shallow, but the bang and boom of graphics takes the slack.

If I have to pick just one I choose "A Christmas Carol," starring Alistair Simms. This is a wonderful, heartwarming, human interest story about how one man is given a second chance to redeem himself. IMO this version (1951) is the best. This actor's range is remarkable in his portrayal of the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge who is transformed into a warm-hearted, compassionate human being after being visited by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future.

Touch of Evil (1958) starring and directing is none other than Orson Welles. Also starring: Janet Leigh, Charelton Heston, Dennis Hopper. A remarkable film on the nature of ego, and how because of self-obsession we ruin ourselves, the film also is study of loyalty, and atmosphere. The acting is phenomenal.
