X-mas goes back to the Greek letter Chi which is the first letter of the Greek name Christ. Retailers obviously like it because it takes up less ad and banner space. Christians have no need to be afraid of it because in Christ we are free.
Jesus did ask us to be sensitive to other Christians. In Paul's day it was meat offered to idols before it was placed on the butcher's display. If someone objects, then by all means for the sake of that person's faith, write Christmas.

It sounds cheap. Writing it down for a friend is ok, but saying in words would just be weird. A nice card should not have X-mas in it. X-mas is for squeezing in a short note. Or putting it on a tag, like, To: Jenny, From: Hannah, Merry x-mas!

If you are a religious person than you should not say X-mas,
Because that takes the word Christ out of
Christmas
you know
But really it's up to you

good question! i ask myself that alot, and quite frankly i think that ppl just use it as an abriviation, ppl dont mean to exclude christ. they want something that they can write on there chritsmas boxes, or on IMs its easier to say x-mas. i dont like it when ppl think that just because ppl use an abriviation that they dont care about the meaning of the holiday, i mean lets face it, christmas isnt what it used to be, i dont know about you but im the only one in my family that is religious, so we dont do any praying or anything for Christmas. But i always remember christ, and yes i use X-MAS! there is nothing wrong with that, IMO. i think that ppl should chill about it, because i love christ, but its easier 2 say x-mas.

I personally don't like it...I just think taking Christ out of Christmas is wrong since it's a holiday honoring Jesus Christ. Plus it's not really that hard to write Christmas anyway.

other than crossing christ out no....as long as your intentions are not to hate on christ and write short hand just for convenience, then i'm not at fault. x-mas is fine but christmas is traditional...write merry christmas and happy new year in cards and when messenging someone write merry xmas...gotta go bye!

Actually, in Greek "X" stands for Christ! So either way you'll be saying Christmas, just one way (X-mas) will be in greek!

A guy posted that a few days ago....

I personally do NOT like CHRIST left out of Christmas but to each their own. Jesus is the Reason for the Season Merry Christmas to you

X is the first letter of the greek word xristos (Christ). But many Christians are offended because they feel it is an attempt to remove Christ from the holiday.
