Adjusting for inflation, it could be "Gone With The Wind"

the best source for Box Office Records is www.boxofficemojo.com

Not adjusting for inflation, here are the top box office winners (just for the US box office):
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/domestic.htm

1 Titanic $600,788,188 1997
2 Star Wars $460,998,007 1977
3 Shrek 2 $441,226,247 2004
4 E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial $435,110,554 1982^
5 Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace $431,088,301 1999
6 Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest $423,315,812 2006
7 Spider-Man $403,706,375 2002
8 Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith $380,270,577 2005
9 The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King $377,027,325 2003
10 Spider-Man 2 $373,585,825 2004
11 The Passion of the Christ $370,782,930 2004^

So in terms of pure money made, Titanic beats Star Wars, a movie 20 years older (but released several times since 1977).
(You will notice that other than Star Wars and ET, every other movie on the list came out within the past 10 years.

Now, when we look at inflation-adjusted box office income (which perhaps accounts more accurately tickets sold, if ticket price increases have remained consistent with inflation rates):
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/adjusted.htm

Gone with the Wind is #1. Star Wars is #2. The Sound of Music, then ET, then The Ten Commandments.. and Titanic is #6.
Titanic is the only movie in the top ten to have come out in the past ten years.

Titanic takes the title for most cash ever made, while Star Wars probably has sold more tickets (but is still second to Gone with the Wind) -- but remember you are still only counting US box office. Titanic did extremely well overseas and remains the international box office champ:

(Star Wars comes in at #20 - but it came out at a time when international distribution of movies was not as big for studios).

Star Wars has made more money in residual sales (also called royalties) and in psin-off product lines like action figures, sleeping bags, lunch boxes, you get the idea.

In terms of revenue generated through ticket sales, Titanic is the highest-grossing film of all time.

The tricky part is that this is in terms of 199- whatever dollars, and not 1977 dollars. A ticket that sold for $5 in 1977 was probably worth twice what a ticket sold for $10 in 1997.

So, the simple answer is, both are the highest grossing films of all time, for their time.

If your information is correct, then I think Star Wars was more popular.

I am not sure about the inflation rate and all, so technically speaking, I have no idea. But if more moviegoers went to watch Star Wars than they went to see Titanic, Star Wars was definitely more popular.

I agree with the ticket price inflation.

400 some million was a whole lot more 35 years ago than it is now.

Overall, Star Wars has made alot more too. And it is a way better movie.

I did a paper on this. Your exactly right. Star Wars was the number 1 movie, titanic only made more money because of inflation rates. I'll e-mail you the proof.

I guess, but think of all the times they rereleased the Star Wars movie and the franchise. I mean there is not much more you could do with Titanic, it sunk Star wars is endless

Titanic has made more, but if you were to account for inflation, then "Gone With The Wind" would be the hands-down winner.

The one that made the most is "Gone With the Wind", if you adjust for real inflation.

You'd have to multiply its take by 25 times to get to present day money. That's for sure.

Titanic. Who wants to watch a bunch of aliens fighting?

I think that's boring, along with many others I've discussed with.

hey 'good driver' you're right. World wide it made the most money EVER, in America, nope. But in the world, yep. So hah, no one beats that! Well done Mel Gibson!
