you need to make sure that the modem that you purchase has the appropriate drivers for your operating system and that it is the right form factor (PCI, CNR, etc.)

I tested v.90 modems for a couple of years, I'm biased towards modems with Motorola and Lucent chipsets..

Yes, un-install your old one, pop in the new one, install it.

You need to know whether it is an interior or exterior modem, most likely an interior modem.

And if it is a MAC or PC.

Any modern modem will do. What's probably more important is your selection of ISP (assuming you're going that route).

Obviously make sure you get one that matches the slots you have (PCIe PCI NUBUS (just joking))
