Hurricane Katrina, like most hurricanes, formed because of low atmospheric pressure and warm seas over the Caribbean area. Thunderstorms began, and the winds began to pick up.

Once the winds got fast enough, they began to draw more warm air into the center of the storm (hurricanes begin as tropical storms). This is called a heat engine, and it only makes a storm more powerful. As long as the hurricane is over water, it just keeps growing and growing. If not for land, I can't imagine how fast they could get. Once the wind reaches about 74 miles per hour, it's officially a hurricane.

And they get their names out of a list that recycles every 6 years, featuring such common names as Gillbert and Opal.

Hope that helps a little.

I did. I'm a Meterologist. I watched it form off the west coast of Africa, march across the atlantic basin and enter the Gulf Of Mexico. With the extremely high surface water temperatures in the Gulf at that time I knew Katrina would be a Monster. And She was Katrina turned into the most perfectly fromed killer Hurricane I have ever seen. I knew She was going to wreak incredible havoc when She made landfall. And, unfortunately for the entire Gulf Coast Region, She did. I believe Global Warming issuses had a significant impact on making Katrina stronger. But Hurricane Katrina formed as normally as any other Hurricane. Only the Mid Atlantic weather patterns had anything to do with Her formation. Now Global Warming did have a great deal to do with her power and strength but not Her formation. And FEMA means The Federal Emergency Management Agency. Hope this helps.
