Even if you don't need it, look at a wired router. There are inexpensive routers with SPI and NAT firewalls built in. It's not perfect protection, but it's a good start.
Check out Norton Internet Security 2007. I honestly believe it's the best in the business. It's not perfect, but it's a good start.
The best Antispyware software in the world is free. Download AD-Aware and Spybot, keep them updated, and run them once a week.
Be careful about what sites you visit, what you download, and even which e-mails you open. Use Windows Update to get security updates. If you use an alternate browser like firefox, there are security updates for that, too.

Hmmm,well
Hullo First
I think i did use lots of those things, like mcafee fire wall, norton internet security, and zone alram pro;all of them are ok when we talk about security, but norton internet security is a little bit stupid, it makes u feel that u want to fire up ur pc,its naggy all the time ,it asks You now and then that(this program is going to use the port***,do u want to enable that program to deal with the internet)yah some thing stupid like that appears all the time, and i could nt bear such a thing, but zone alarm pro was fantastic ,and so smart according to the norton thing and it has been awarded many awards for its good security,So i recommend it for sure ,you can download a trial version from that web site www.zonealarm.com,they also have a free version, and by the way norton internet securitys is so heavy it takes a large amount of ram,so if u wana use it,just make sure to have 512m or 1G of ram just to work smoothly on your Machine there, coz i have 256 and my pc works so slow with norton, but perfect with zone alarm,By the way you can also Try bitdefender, i did not try it yet ,may be its ok,I hope that I did some help here, my best wishes,Good l^^^K

No software will guarentee you 100% safety for your PC.
Also 'the best' is relative to the functionality for how easily -you- can use it. If you're not particularly security savy you might find extensive protection softwares too cumbersom for you to utalize their full effeciency.
That said, look for the following first, What are your immediate protection options, does your ISP offer any supported software for free or for a special offer? If going for free software, do some reading up on reports from other users. If purchasing, make sure you understand the software you are buying, also make sure it offers support from the company producing it. I'll use Norton as an example only since I am familiar with it. If you buy the software, you must pay a subscription fee to keep it updated, but they will continue to give you live support if you pay the active subscription fee, along with updating your software regularly to make sure it is uptodate on all newer threats to your PC.
Another note on PC security, a router works wonders for a great many things, coupled with a bit of software aid and some know-how I personally find it the best solution for my own home network security.

The perfect solution for you (assuming you want to stay with Windows as opposed to Linux as someone suggested, which by the way is THE BEST Solution and don't go for a Macintosh either) would be Kaspersky Suite.
http://usa.kaspersky.com/products/
Kaspersky is by far the best one out of everything out there including AVG Free, Zone Alarm, and anything that Norton or McAfee has to offer. Kaspersky is Russian made and it is much more stable, very light running on your PC and far more protective than anything else.
The problem with giant brand names like Norton and McAfee is that there software has just become too cumbersome and it bogs down your resources. It is ridiculous how much they drain your computer. Your computer will be very slow because the virus definitions that they use to scan for viruses, are huge.
Other names are simply not good enough. I would highly recommend Kaspersky. You won't even know that it is running in the background. I used to sell and repair computers for a living and we would often get rid of viruses (the most common problem) for customers. In my experience, we would sometimes get viruses that were embedded (for example in an executable or in a compressed file so that as soon as you decompress it, you are infected) and Kaspersky was the only one (repeatedly) that would detect the embedded virus. All other ones including AVG Free, Norton, and McAfee would not detect it until the file was decompressed and your computer was infected.
If you want something free, get
AVG Antivirus and ZoneAlarm firewall (both free)

AVG (even thought it is free) is much better than McAfee and Norton. ZoneAlarm firewall has both a firewall and an anti-spyware. So that you have the smallest complete set for free.
If you want to spend money, then Kaspersky is by far a better choice.

This is all in one by Kaspersky.

Hi there,
Instead of all these "Mine is better than yours" answers that go on around here, I'll instead answer with the facts.
Looking at current protection ratings, AVG scores a lowly 90% protection against all known viruses, whilst Avast comes in at 92%. This means they are letting through roughly one in every ten viruses - pretty shocking.
Norton and McAfee are slightly better by protecting against 98.3% and circa 97% respectfully of all known viruses. However, Norton and McAfee can be known for being very heavy programs which can tend to slow down certain machines. If you are thinking of installing either of these I would definitely recommend you download their free trial to check it does not affect your machine in this way prior to opening your wallet.
If you would be interested in other Security products that are better than all of these, you should try either Prevx1, Kaspersky or F-Secure who all score over a 99% protection rating.
Out of these three my recommendation would be Prevx1, as this is the quickest at protecting against new outbreaks of all malware.

i've got been utilising laptop for a protracted time, and the commonplace of virus checkers etc fluctuates a great deal. twelve months norton may be the suitable, the year after avg... etc. i might have reported avg, in spite of the shown fact that examining modern comments it threw up lots of fake positives, and did no longer stumble on many new viruses yet in its database. the single that consistently appeared to seem trumps replaced into ESET smart protection. it is likewise very very easy on gadget components, even whilst in comparison with different easy-weight antivirus' at the same time with avg. I presently use that one and incredibly propose it. once you're a student they provide 50% decrease value too. once you're finding for a loose one then head for avg.

This is really a matter of opinion, experts would give you a variety of answers...but based on my experience with home and office computers I would say McAfee Internet Security Suite. There are 4 components included: VirusScan, Personal Firewall Plus, Privacy Service, and SpamKiller. And the price for all this is reasonable. www.mcafee.com

The VERY BEST is to get away from Windows. It is prevalent, targetted, vulnerable and badly coded. So move to Linux or Mac (Unix).
If that is not possible, you certainly need to do several things: anti-cirus, anti-spyware, disable cookies, Yahoo beacon and PIE (Flash).
It is like real life, you need multiple protections
