This is to settle a little disagreement between my hubby and I. I say that of course they do, and he says that they most likely use cloth and wash it. Do they use modern conveniences like toilet paper and kotex, or do they really use cloth?

This came up because my mother in law had a date, and when she went to go to the restroom at his house, he didn't have any toilet paper, or any paper products in the house, and we were all laughing and my hubby said maybe he was channeling the amish. It was pretty funny, and I still find this question interesting.

They use toilet paper. They're not as outdated as most may think.

The simple answer is, yes, they use toilet paper and real toilets. You might be surprised at the "modern" things in an Amish home, including telephones, gas stoves and refrigerators, even gas-powered washing machines. It's just electricity they shun and modern technology that they believe might corrupt or break down the family unit or the community.

I remember something on this while I was working on my PhD (Religion) Actually some do some don't. Ithink its a bit like some of us use wet wipes too and others don't (Yuck!, but whatever)

As best I can ascertain, most, now do, but the most old-fashioned probably still do not. As too sanitary napkins, I believe most do not, but use cloth.

I do know that among things they make and craft are toilet paper cabinets and baskets. Gotta be a reason.

yes amish use toilet paper, there are what you call the old order amish that do not use electricity, and they drive horse and buggy
but they use toilet paper the same way we do. and then you have what they call modern amish, that now use electric, have phones,
drive cars, but mostly just plain cars, they useually take the radio out,and they do not have tv's, but again they use toilet paper.

The Amish use newspaper, and if that is not availble, the guys just use the first digit of the left hand and wipe it off on their wive's dress at meal-time!
