I think you are definately reading too much into this. Red isn't JUST used to signify communism/socialism (and for alll those confused answerers, it's the same thing). I definitely don't think it's ironic, to say the least. If the Coke folk really did change Santa's suit (which, I have to be honest, I doubt) I would say that communism was the last thing on their minds, and that red is far too common a colour for one to be able to logically see the irony of the alleged act.

Actually funnily enough it was coca cola that put santa in the red suit for advertising. Before then he had always been depicted in the traditional costuming of the region or in a victorian suit of green, not red

Santa's clothing is really scarlet and gray. Gray from the chimney dust. Good things come from scarlet and gray. Go Buckeyes!
BTW: red was communist as in red menace. Also red menace as in Nebraska red and Oklahoma Big Red. All of those are bad.
So Go Santa in Scarlet and Gray.

Santa was originally Green and in some place you still see evidents of this! The reason he is red is that's the colour of coke!

Hi,
Oh dear, you seem not to have an understanding of "Santa"
Or Saint Clause He was a Bishop, thererefore dressed in red.
Nothing political about it !
Gave out presents to local kids, and generally a nice bloke.
Get a grip on reality, please !

"What is a sword? It's a blade. To the warrior it is a tool of war. To the chef, a cooking instrument." Santa is what you make it. I think he's a symbol for my little nephew about a time of the year where he gets to see his full family together, eating great food, and laughing...that's what I think.

They probably chose red because it was eye catching and a good contrast to green Christmas trees.

Red or green, it is all the same to colour blind people, and since many of us are, nothing to get red under the collar about unless you are green with jealousy!

This question as been bouncing round for weeks. He was in red before. All Coke did was make it more popular, and did make the colours more bright!
