Because they're stupid companies that are money grabbers. Ohhh, let's see how much consumption takes place and then screw the public by downsizing the original intention of the product. I went to buy Honeycombs cereal.... what a gyp!; it used to be- Honeycomb's big, yeah yeah yeah, it's not small... no no no. They're soooooooo small now, new and improved my homesick butt!

Its not that they didn't do it right the first time. Didn't you heard of the term "room for improvement"? Just like when we first started off in learning to swim, we can only managed half a lap. Days after days, we improved ourselves and now we can go for few laps at a go.
Just look at the handphone technology these days. Wouldn't you feel happy with its features now compare to 10 years back?

It depends on the product. Sometimes it really is "improved" due to new technology, eco-friendly ingredients, a change in recipe (think "no trans fats!"), etc. And sometimes the "new and improved" may simply be referring to the new packaging and improved ad campaign. Good question though!

Usually the powers that be didn't realize it wasn't perfect...it usually takes an outsider to make them realize that their product can be better hence the use of "new and improved". However, it doesn't always work --- think of New Coke in the 1980s.

A) They didn't know of certain problems with the product until the general public tried it out and voiced their complaints...
B) It is a marketing ploy to make you think you have to buy the same product again because it is supposedly better.

So they can sell you two.
They usually already have the design for the 'new and improved' product when they release the first one.

It was right in the first place; they "New and Improve" it as an excuse to screw it up.

That's what "customer surveys" are for. A company may introduce a product....then put it out there...and ask for customer opinions on how they can improve their product. Maybe that's why...maybe....
