He is overweight and eats everything. He will sometimes even try to get in the trash to eat. We try to keep him out of the dogs food in the morning, but its hard to always keep a eye on him. My dog will just sit there and watch him eat his food, it's crazy. Is there anything I can put in my dogs food to keep him away?

Why don't you just feed your pets on a schedule. When it's feeding time, put the cat in one room and the dog in another and close the doors. Give them 15-20 minutes to eat, then pick up the bowls. It's not very difficult.

Get a trash can with a lid that the cat can't open.

Obesity in cats is a HUGE problem. It leads to serious diseases like diabetes (believe me, you don't want to end up having to give your cat insulin injections twice a day for life! Get his weight down!) Also, dog food doesn't have some essential nutrients that cats need so if he's not getting cat food as much as dog food, he's not on a healthy diet.

A common problem in homes that have both cats and dogs centers around the food issue and which species should eat which food. Unlike many cats that are finicky, in general, dogs truly love their mealtimes and puppies will eat almost anything. If you have cat food lying around, most puppies and many dogs can't resist it and will eat the cat's food. Dogs love to eat cat food because they love the higher protein, higher calorie content and because they can get away with it if it's just lying around. Although the occasional theft of some cat food probably won't seriously harm your dog and usually the main consequence is some diarrhea or loose stools, try not to let these accidents happen. Cat food is formulated for a cat's metabolism and dog food is made for dogs. A dog that eats a steady diet of cat food will almost certainly gain too much weight and will miss out on nutrients that it needs from its own food. Cats are carnivores and dogs are omnivores (meat and plant eaters) so cat food is missing the 'plant' nutrients that are present in dog food. I would suggest maybe you put the food up on a bench or chair so the dogs can't get it. I don't think it is a good idea to feed your dogs cat food. There is a reason pet food companies manufacture both cat and dog foods.

I'm not sure of anything that you can put in the dog's food, but I had the same problem with my cat and whenever I saw her eating dog food, I would squirt her with a little water. You could also try putting your cat in a different room when you feed the dog and put the trash can somewhere where he can't get to it. Good Luck!

My cat does the same thing. I try to stop her but she wont stop. If you REALLY want the cat to stop get the dog food and water holder that is up high, about one foot off the ground. I never tried that because the cat will just jump up and eat it still. She is also overweight. She will also eat anything BUT CHEESE,! surprizingly!! Other wise I just let her keep eating it and she seems to be fine with it. Good Luck!!

our one cat likes dog food to but not good for them. try finding a more nourishing tastier cat food that he likes maybe add some wet food to it. feed the dog in the bath room until he is done eating. ask your vet about a good food that will satisfy his cravings. maybe his food does not have enough protien in it. cats are extreme meat eaters and some cat and dog foods are loaded with fillers so they eat more to get satisfied. the more expensive kinds have more protein in them so as to speak u pay for what you get
