Take care of the simple thing first. is he getting enough water? is he working out allot running etc? is his leg cold.
Get the Small stuff out of the way first, then there are many other cause that can cause cramping in the leg.

Potassium is good for cramping.... Bananas, oranges or orange juice, tomatoes, etc.
Also, keeping the muscles hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Potassium is water soluble & needs to be replenished, so the above, in combination will help. Also quinine tablets or capsules can help WHEN TAKEN AS DIRECTED....

I used to get cramps a lot in my legs. He needs to make sure he warms up before and after any exercise. Also, try getting him to take magnesium tablets. my mother in law swears by them. He also needs to drink more water. make sure he is getting an adequate amount of salt as well (but not too much, or that will make it worse).

potassium! If you are not getting enough potassium it can cause cramping in your legs. also try to do a little stretching at night before you go to bed. if that doesn't help consult a physician. it could be something more severe.

Been there...done that.
And the stuff that rid me of them was drinking Gatorade and taking calcium supplements.(ie:2-3 Tums a day)
Started working almost immediately.

Drink Gatorade. My husband works outside all day in Florida. He drinks Gatorade first and then water. Cramps are from dehydration.

He needs things that will help the blood flow to his legs. Massage will help same as heat packs. He needs to get it checked out to make sure he doesn't have any blood clots
