OH MY GOODNESS! That is a hard one Nita!
It would depend upon the young man. Is he Athletic, into cars, computers or their games? Does he like to go to sporting events?
You need to determine what his favorite interests are. Does he like to read about American history? If he does, pick the time period he likes the most and give him a magazine subscription about it or a good book about it.
Does he like cars? you could do the same thing or get him tickets to an event. If he is into Tennis or golf, you could get him some of his favorite equipment, clothes or tickets to different courses.
Really take a look at what interests him most and you will come up with a good idea. If not a gift certificate is always welcome.

Go to the local airport and see if they have "discovery flights" which basically amount to a first lesson in flight. My airport here in Wisconsin has a Cessna training group - 1/2 hour - 45min for about $80 - and you get to fly for a while. Kinda cool for those who don't normally get to do that sorta thing.

if he lieks a sports team then guys usually like hats, t-shirts, and other stuff to do with their favorite sports team
also gift cards always work!
if everything else fails everyone loves chocolate!pluss it's the thought that counts
